Occasionally tonsils and/or adenoids need to be removed. The procedure requires anesthesia and is almost always done as an outpatient. There are tactics that your surgeon and anesthesiologist can employ that will reduce and, in some cases eliminate, anxiety before the procedure and upset stomach afterward. There are also techniques that have been shown to significantly reduce pain associated with the surgery. Since each patient is different, Dr. Lockette will discuss the specifics with you prior to scheduling a procedure.
Tonsillectomy is the third most common surgery performed on children in the United States, behind circumcision and ear tubes. It is often performed in combination with adenoidectomy.
Unfortunately, many children are plagued with recurrent or persistent ear infections. Although hearing impairment can occur, it is usually short-term. Pain is usually the most bothersome symptom and can be severe. There are numerous medical treatments that usually work. When these fail, ear tubes are an option. Ear tubes are placed in the eardrum and provide an alternate route for drainage as the child matures and “outgrows” the problem. Placement of tubes is an outpatient procedure.
Chronic sinus disease is often managed medically. When medical treatments fail, there are surgical options including endoscopic sinus surgery and balloon sinuplasty. Endoscopic sinus surgery describes the use of a small telescope to surgically enlarge the natural drainage paths of the affected sinuses. The procedure requires a brief anesthetic. Pain is minimal and recovery is usually no more than a few days. Balloon sinuplasty is less aggressive and is often appropriate for children or adults with less severe disease. The procedure involves using and small balloon catheter to enlarge the natural sinus openings.
